Milton Avery

Apparently I am very influenced by Milton Avery. I would say the entire Avery family, actually. I had never heard of him or his wife and daughter until earlier this year, when someone commented on one of my Instagram posts. I see it. Someone also said early David Hockney and I see that, too. Because I dropped out of art school and studied English instead, my knowledge of art history is slim, and that of modern art history slimmer still. I admire all of the artists' use of color blocking and simplified shapes, their palettes, their composition. I like the trajectory I'm on right now, though I’m not sure how much longer I'll be on it. If I get my home studio back this summer, I'm really itching to paint. I have several ideas I've been writing and sketching about, and I'm not ready yet, but I will be. What I'm doing now, slow, steady, getting more confident, is clearly in preparation for something new. I don’t know what that will be.
